About the Role
The Terminal Manager is responsible for driving and measuring all key aspects of daily terminal operations, including Operations, Maintenance, Safety, and Administration. This role plays a critical part in achieving departmental goals related to Service, Productivity, Driver Retention, and Profitability.
You will act as both a strategic leader and hands-on problem solver, using data to drive decisions, supporting teams through change, and ensuring operational excellence every day.
1. Business Management and Analysis
- Develop, monitor, and analyze Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to:
- Cost control (cartage, overtime, hours per store, empty miles)
- Driver retention
- Productivity (miles per hour)
- Equipment efficiency (reefers, heaters, maintenance, trailer bank integrity)
- Service levels
- Analyze and report KPI results weekly through Rolemax
- Implement and measure action plans to improve performance
- Identify root causes of issues and lead effective, data-driven solutions
- Work daily with Operations to ensure proper planning, staffing, and equipment availability
- Monitor service failures, accidents, incidents, and disciplinary matters
- Approve terminal invoices and outside cartage
- Address driver concerns (payroll, dispatch, equipment)
- Manage vacation and time-off planning to ensure continuity
- Participate in driver and office staff annual reviews
- Assess equipment needs and maximize utilization
- Support Sales with operational growth needs
- Ensure on-time service performance above 98%
- Communicate department objectives across all shifts
- Partner with HR on recruitment and onboarding compliance
- Oversee training plans to meet operational demands
- Evaluate and coach employees to build engagement, accountability, and performance
- Maintain positive relationships with drivers and office staff
- Address driver issues proactively with HR support
- Assist with conflict resolution, pay inquiries, vacation and holiday requests
- Ensure compliance with Labour Code Part II
- Manage leaves of absence (WorkSafe / LTD)
- Maintain accurate employee records
- Resolve customer complaints in a timely and professional manner
- Ensure all driver files meet safety and compliance standards
- Work closely with the Safety department on incidents and accidents
- Enforce Hours of Service and safety protocols
- Monitor MPG and idle-time targets and implement corrective plans
- Provide leadership on temperature-controlled load compliance and documentation
- Control terminal expenses and operating budget
- Review and understand Profit & Loss statements
- Prepare and manage the annual terminal budget
7. Other Duties
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Western Terminals
Qualifications and Competencies
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 5 years of transportation operations management experience
- Proven success in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
- Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
- Analytical mindset with the ability to turn data into action
- Goal-oriented, accountable, and adaptable to change
- Intermediate computer skills (AS400)
