Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:00am – 5:00pm

The Operations Manager is responsible for all facets of daily operations, including the management of Planners, Operations Support Team Members, and Drivers. The role is focused on aligning the department with corporate goals such as profitable business growth, exceptional customer service, and progressive transportation solutions.


Key Responsibilities

Business Management and Analysis

  • Develop and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to cost control, retention, productivity, and equipment efficiency
  • Analyze KPI data, identify trends, and implement action plans to influence results
  • Identify root causes of operational issues and implement corrective solutions while measuring effectiveness
  • Approve all outside cartage invoices
  • Complete periodic profit and loss analysis and maintain control of department budgets

Organization of Work

  • Organize daily Alberta operations through conference calls to balance customer needs with equipment and driver availability
  • Establish and communicate daily action plans, load priorities, and special assignments across all shifts
  • Monitor execution of daily plans with regular follow‑up to ensure operational discipline
  • Work closely with Customer Service to improve appointment planning and reduce empty miles and relays
  • Participate in productivity meetings and provide solutions to recurring bottlenecks
  • Follow up on service failures and corrective action plans
  • Plan staff vacations and time off to ensure operational continuity
  • Train and update staff on border and customs initiatives, including ACE and ACI
  • Train, monitor, and maintain CT‑PAT and PIP initiatives

Training, Coaching, and Development

  • Communicate departmental objectives and track progress with all shifts
  • Hire, train, develop, and mentor office staff and drivers
  • Conduct employee evaluations as a coaching and development tool
  • Implement cross‑training and contingency plans for emergency coverage
  • Perform 30/60/90/365‑day reviews with office staff and drivers

Labour Relations

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the driver fleet
  • Proactively address labour concerns and spearhead driver meetings
  • Address payroll, scheduling, dispatch, and equipment concerns

Daily Operational Responsibilities

  • Ensure the success and performance of all staff reporting to the role
  • Be on call for emergency response, operational issues, and customer concerns
  • Reduce cartage, bobtailing, empty miles, and driver wait time
  • Improve equipment utilization, tractor productivity, and RPM by laneway
  • Audit driver pay to eliminate unnecessary off‑duty time
  • Review driver routes to ensure proper routing and compliance
  • Improve driver satellite messaging accuracy and reduce manual calls
  • Coordinate with Maintenance to ensure timely equipment servicing and repairs
  • Ensure dispatch activity is live, current, and fully utilized
  • Investigate incidents and accidents and determine root cause
  • Improve driver retention and reduce turnover
  • Maintain driver bids, vacation schedules, and office staff schedules
  • Follow up on night reports, late loads, and service failures
  • Resolve customer complaints and ensure requests are handled in a timely manner
  • Support Sales with operational input and growth strategy
  • Fill in for staff during holidays or absences as required
  • Perform duties assigned by the VP of Operations

Policies, Programs, and Procedures

  • Lead by example in respecting company policies, procedures, seniority rules, and bid requirements
  • Ensure consistent compliance across all operations staff

Qualifications and Competencies

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of transportation operations management experience
  • Proven success in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to turn data into action
  • Goal-oriented, accountable, and adaptable to change
  • Intermediate computer skills (AS400)
  • Strong alignment with company values and continuous improvement culture
